Because they are not Italian. Italy is the home of defensive mastery , yet all these foreigners (Samuel-Chivu-Lucio-Maicon) don't seem to defend well in Champions league.Why is Inter's defence and midfield so weak in Europe?You're right, aside from Maicon, Inter simply has a poor defense. The only reason they perform well in serie a is because they "brute force" the opposition. As such, Inter really isn't a complete team, they're good on offense, but their defense cannot stand up to other european offenses.

They are used to only having to defend against serie a offense, which build up attacks much slower.



If you watch serie a this year, you'll notice that teams like Inter and Juve who are trying to "brute force" the opposition, are not really excelling as much as they were last year. Teams like Sampdoria and Parma who play traditional calcio are starting to make a big impact, and hopefully within a few years calcio will retake serie a.



Simply, Inter isn't a complete team. Ever since the golden ages in the 60's, Inter has been (even though I hate to say it) not very promising in champions league. HOWEVER that will change this year. Ok, maybe in the last 2 games, the defence wasn't water tight and the midfield lacked creativity, but that is ONLY BECAUSE THEY WERE NERVOUS, its a lot of pressure of a a couple dozen shoulders. Also, because Inter haven't won CL recently, the players are worried of someting going wrong. But, I think with Mou's amazing coaching tactics and confident boosters INTER WILL RULE THE CL this year. I think by the next game, their pre game nerves will be gone and Inter's Defence, Midfield AND lethal strike force will click and reclaim CL glory.
