What is the difference between internet and inter-network?

Internetworking is the combination of multiple sub-networks into one, by using routing technology. It signaled the beginning of the development of networking technologies that eventually made the internet (which was originally called the arpanet) possible, starting with the ethernet (CSMA/CD) local area network and TCP/IP protocols. Before this, each major computer company created a networking technology with extremely limited capability for connecting with other brands of computers.



The first network interface adapter for the internet was a stack of electronic components over 4 feet tall called an Information Message Processor (IMP).
